Chapter 11:

The Match

I walked towards the school doors with Beau, Charlie, and Malachi, and took a last look at dad over my shoulder. He had made some tentative steps towards Faith’s dad, as if to say something, but Lonnie Jenkins just gave him an indignant look before fading away. Dad just looked back at me and shrugged. Getting to know more was going to be up to my powers of investigation.

I was looking forward to talking to Faith again, but I was nervous that I would make it too obvious that I was trying to find out the information that dad needed. I also had to tell a lie to my friends. Charlie and Malachi had both asked what my dad had wanted to speak to me about the night before. I couldn’t tell them, so I just had to say he wanted to know more about the events at the beach and left it at that.

That was the wrong answer. Now I had all the lads thinking that I was holding information back about the big eel under the sea. Fortunately for me, you could distract them by shifting the subject to sports. There were some trials later on in the day to see how the new students might measure up for the Gaelic football team. I got everyone chatting about that instead. Being a secret agent wasn’t easy.

We were a few minutes early, so we waited just outside in the sun before we had to go to our first class. Faith and Hannah were normally two of the last to arrive, so if I stood with the others outside until the bell rang, then I would usually have time to smile with a wave.

Sure enough, she caught my eye and looked really pleased to see me. That made me happy. I waved back, and started to walk over to say hello when Mrs. Coloma came out the doors and walked straight between us.

She handed Faith a piece of paper, and seemed really annoyed when she looked at it. She stared over towards me, looking angry.

Mrs. Coloma caught her looking at me. “Alright, boys, it’s time to get yourselves inside the school. Hurry along now,” she ordered.

It wasn’t like Mrs. Coloma. I knew her to be one of the friendlier teachers. You never saw her acting sternly unless she had fallen out with Mr. Pelon.

We dragged our feet over to the door as Mrs. Coloma watched us go inside. My attention was drawn to Faith who was looking sad and unhappy.

Irish language was my first class. I would find out what was happening there.

Normally, I would sit in a group with Beau, Faith, and Hannah, but by the time class was about to start, the girls hadn’t shown up. I was worried and couldn’t really concentrate in class. I started to wonder where she might be and what was going on. For the moment, dad’s investigation was the last thing I was thinking of. I just wanted to know what was happening to Faith.
